Join us on a magical journey with your furry friend at Walt Disney World’s dog friendly resorts! Pluto isn’t the only pup welcome in Walt Disney World. Give in to those puppy dog eyes and bring your pooch along for adventure-filled days of long walks, sprawling green spaces, and a super fun, all-inclusive resort just for pets.

A Magical Stay: Pet-Friendly Resorts at Walt Disney World

Until 2018, Walt Disney World had a strict pet policy that excluded all animals, except for service dogs, on its entire property including at all resorts. But then something totally pawsome happened and they changed their rules to allow dogs to stay with their families at four of the property’s 20 resorts. Read on to learn all about the four resorts that invite your pup to wag their tails in Walt Disney World.

We took Pamplemousse, our Chief Barketing Officer, on a whirlwind stay at Disney World.  Fort Wilderness made the top of her list!

1. The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground

Perfect for nature-loving pups and families! The Fort Wilderness Resort is an ideal home-away-from-home featuring 750 forested acres filled with wildlife and woodland trails and complete with dog friendly, fully furnished, private cabins. The cabins each offer full kitchens and bathrooms, sleep six and can accommodate up to two dogs for an additional pet fee of $50 per night. Cabin rates vary depending on the season but generally run between $400-$500 per night. In addition to enjoying the cabin site, your furry friend is welcome to explore all of the walking trails throughout Fort Wilderness with no trails off-limits (but the multiple pool decks are off-limits). You’ll also enjoy the off-leash Waggin’ Trails Dog Park where your pup can jump, run, and play — the only off-leash park in all of the Walt Disney World resorts! When it comes to food, throughout the resort you’ll find multiple, casual eats spots (which mainly feature home-cooking style foods) where pup can join you in an outdoor setting such as The Chuck Wagon, which is a rotating food truck(s) located at Chip N’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long site where movies are often screened, and the walk-up window at Crockett’s Tavern (beside Pioneer Hall) — the perfect spot to grab pub-grub and a glass of wine or a cocktail to go! Please note, The cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground are dog friendly, and dogs are allowed to stay with their owners in RVs but dogs are not allowed in tents, pop up campers or the Fort Wilderness Lodge or Villas.

Each building in the Art of Animation Resort has a fun and colorful theme.

2. Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

The most family-friendly and budget-friendly of the dog-welcoming resorts, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort features tons of kid-friendly amenities such as the largest resort pool in all of Walt Disney World, storybook landscapes, and themed rooms and, what’s even more puptastic, this resort also welcomes dogs to join in on the family vacation! (For an additional charge of $50 per night and up to two dogs per room.) Room rates vary by season but figure around $300/night, with suites priced at around $600/night. While furry friends are not allowed in the pool areas, they are welcome to enjoy many of the resort’s walking and jogging paths as well as dedicated “business” areas outside buildings 2, 5, 6, and 8, which you’ll find on the map you receive at check-in. A highlight for you and your pooch is the dog friendly jogging path that runs along Hourglass Lake. When it comes to dining, your furry family member can hang with you while you enjoy a meal at the resort’s casual eatery, Landscape of Flavors, as well as at The Drop Off Pool Bar, which is just outside of the pool deck areas.

Dog Friendly Disney Port Orleans Resort

We loved walking the meandering tree-lined trails in the Port Orleans Resort!

3. Disney Port Orleans Resort — Riverside

The Disney Port Orleans Resort — Riverside captures the spirit of Louisiana with loads of Southern charm. With five pools throughout the resort, your family will surely have their pick of fun, though your furry family member must hang behind while the humans splash about. However, there are plentiful meandering trails and grassy areas for your leashed pup to explore in addition to specific spots to do their business (at areas 15, 24, 80, and 95 on the map you’ll receive at check-in). Room rates generally start at $350/night plus an additional $50/night pet fee, up to two dogs per room. You and your pooch will be pleased to know that they can tag along while you dine and drink at Muddy Rivers, a secluded bar and lounge that serves classic American dishes on the woody and breezy Ol’ Man Island. Best of all, this restaurant and bar has both covered and uncovered seating options for you and your pup with umbrellas and fans to help you both stay cool. For a fun night in at this resort, head to the Magnolia South Pool Deck on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. for Movies Under the Stars. Sorry, humans only, but no need to hang your tail because just across the road from this hotel is the puptacular Best Friends Dog Hotel where your pup can make their own friends and have fun! 4. Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

The chicest of the four pet-friendly resorts, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort is pawfect for your pampered pooch/pooches (up to two dogs per room.) This elegant New England-style yacht club and lakeside hotel features rooms beginning at a rate of around $690/night with a $75/night pet fee, a three-acre water wonderland (for humans, only), a swanky full-service fitness center, and upscale dining options. While dogs are not invited to join their humans at most of the resort’s plentiful restaurants, they can relax alongside you at Hurricane Hanna’s Waterside Bar & Grille with views of Stormalong Bay. As for the great outdoors, there is a green, grassy area dogs can indulge in (and do their business, too,) and a jogging trail that they’re welcome to join you on while you take in the fresh salty air.

Paws and Relax: Pet Care at Disney

If you plan to be out of your hotel room for longer than your pooch prefers, or if you’d rather that your pup socialize and play while you’re exploring Walt Disney World, Best Friends Dog Hotel, located in the Disney Springs Resort area, is THE PLACE for your pup (as well as other pets!). This posh pet resort features 17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor space, 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor runs and play areas, and a 25,000-square-foot dog park. Best Friends Dog Hotel offers options for every family’s needs, from doggy day camp to overnight accommodations. You’ll choose from different levels of luxury, which of course all vary in cost, but each option includes a pet webcam so you can check in on your fur baby. There are also add-on options like playgroup, cuddle time, walk and explore, and more. Also on-site is a grooming salon to ensure your pup is fluffy and fresh! To keep all of its furry guests safe, up-to-date vaccination records are required to enjoy this pet resort.

Disney’s Pet Policy: Rules for a Fairy Tail Experience

At each of the four dog friendly Walt Disney World resorts, you’ll receive “Pluto’s Welcome Kit” upon arrival, which contains a pet ID tag, a dog mat, bowls, doggy clean-up bags, pet pads, a Pluto Do Not Disturb door hanger, and a dog walking map with specific pup friendly areas for your furry friend to explore. Additionally, you can find pet relief areas marked in the My Disney Experience app. At check-in, guests will need to sign a Pet Agreement to confirm that they understand their resort’s pet rules which state that dogs must not be left alone in the room for more than seven hours, must be well-behaved and on leash in all public areas, and up-to-date on all vaccines with proper proof (which you may be asked to submit in advance). Dogs are not allowed in any of the theme parks, in any of the resorts’ pool areas, or indoors at any of the restaurants, lounges, etc., and pet owners must clean up after their pets at all times.

Magical Moves: Pet-Friendly Transportation in Disney

Pet friendly transportation throughout Walt Disney World is very limited. In most scenarios, unless your pet is a service dog they are not allowed on public Disney transportation. The exceptions are Disney’s Minnie Van services where dogs must be leashed or in a carrier at all times.

Exploring Beyond the Castle: Off-Site Adventures

Although your four-legged family members can’t join you in any of the Walt Disney World popular “downtowns,” they can join you while you explore other local downtowns and areas like downtown Orlando, Celebration Town Center, and Winter Park. And while each has its unique draw, Winter Park, affectionately referred to as “Little Europe,” tops our list with a world-class dining, arts and shopping district that welcomes your pooch to join in the fun. Many of the retail shops are dog friendly in addition to the outdoor patios of Winter Park’s cafes and restaurants. After a day of shopping and dining, head to nearby Lake Baldwin Dog Park where your pup can enjoy a leash-free romp in their dog run or a leisurely walk across the park’s 23 acres!

Open daily from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., Celebration Town Center is a great destination to visit with your pup in tow. From world-class dining with many dog friendly options to shopping and entertainment, your furry companion is welcome to join in on much of it. Your pup can join you while you dine in the open air at restaurants offering patio dining like Thai Thani and Colombia Restaurant. Don’t leave without checking out Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming for a special treat for your pooch.

With four fur-fect resort options to choose from and beautiful, manicured meandering walking trails, plus the most inviting and exciting doggy daycare mere moments away from the theme parks, exploring the magic of Walt Disney World with your furry friend is an experience you and your family will remember forever.
