Is JetBlue Airways Pet Friendly? – JetBlue Airways Pet Policy (2024)

Written By: Michelle Kelgord

JetBlue Airways is a popular airline known for its sensational amenities, including ample legroom and WiFi capabilities for passengers. In 2023 JetBlue ranked #1 in customer satisfaction for its first and business class sections for the second year in a row.

With all of the friendly features and commitment to customer satisfaction, it’s no secret why JetBlue Airways stands out as a top choice for travelers.

But is JetBlue the right option for those bringing their pawsome buddies along for the ride? In this article, find out everything you need to know about JetBlue Airways’ pet policy!

Is JetBlue Airways Pet Friendly?

JetBlue Airways is pet-friendly, but only for smaller dogs because JetBlue only allows dogs under 20 pounds to fly in the cabin with their humans, as carry-ons. JetBlue does not offer an option for larger dogs. If you have a larger dog, see our article about airlines that allow big dogs in cabin.

JetBlue Airways Pet Policy Details

It’s always recommended to “know before you go,” especially if you need to know whether or not you can bring your furry friend along for the ride. Below, you’ll find in-depth information about JetBlue Airways’ pet policy when it comes to both in cabin carry-on and cargo.

JetBlue Airways Pet Policy for Carry-On Pets:

JetBlue Airways is definitely “little-dog-friendly.” They accept all dogs (and cats) as long as the combined weight of your furry companion and the carrier does not exceed 20 pounds. Two pets are allowed per person (they must be in their own carriers with separate seat purchase), and unaccompanied minors are not permitted to travel alone with a pet.

Here are a few more rules to know:

  • Your pet and carrier count as one personal carry-on item.
  • The carrier must be able to fit under the seat directly in front of you.
  • Only one pet is allowed per carrier.
  • Pets must be able to turn around, move, and stand comfortably when the carrier is closed.
  • Pet strollers can be checked at the counter or gate-checked.
  • Pets must remain inside their pet carrier while at the airport and inside the plane.
  • The carrier must be placed underneath the seat in front of you. However, you can hold the carrier on your lap or purchase an extra seat so the carrier can be placed on the seat beside you.
  • If traveling on Blue Basic fare, you can also bring a personal item with your pet carrier.
  • There is a $125 pet fee each way.
  • Only six pets are allowed per flight.
  • Pets are prohibited in Mint seats, emergency exit rows, bulkhead seats, or interline/codeshare bookings.
  • U.S. vaccination requirements vary between states, and customers are responsible for knowing the requirements before travel. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands require vaccination documentation.
  • Puppies must be 16 weeks to enter the United States and must have had a rabies vaccine within one month of travel.

Carrier-specific rules:

Carriers must not exceed 17″ L x 12.5″ W x 8.5″ H and must be FAA-approved. To make things easier, JetBlue offers carriers that are 16” L x 10” W x 8.5” H and can conveniently be purchased online, or you can buy one at the ticket counter for $55 – although quantities are limited.

Regardless of the carrier used, it must have a leak-proof bottom and be well-ventilated. Soft-sided and hard-sided carriers are allowed on JetBlue Airways.

Things to know about traveling with a service animal on JetBlue Airways:

Trained service dogs are allowed on JetBlue Airways, but notification to JetBlue must be completed 48 hours before departure (if not, you will need to fill out a USDOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form with a Complaints Resolution Official at the airport). Service animals must be controlled by their handler at all times and must be leashed or harnessed.

Here are a few more important facts:

  • If bringing your service dog to London Heathrow or Gatwick, you must have the Animal Reception Centre’s approval before arrival.
  • No service animals in training are permitted.
  • Larger service dogs must be able to fit within the footprint of the seat you have purchased. If it is too large, you must buy an additional seat to guarantee travel or wait until there is a flight with enough empty seats to accommodate your helpful hound.
  • Dogs cannot physically sit in a seat. They must remain on the floor. The only exception is smaller service dogs that can fit on your lap without touching the individual beside you.

JetBlue Airways Pet Policy for Pets in Cargo:

Larger dogs are not permitted on JetBlue Airways, so cargo is not an option.

Restrictions and Exceptions:

Customers should know that there are specific rules and regulations regarding international destinations. Customers are fully responsible for knowing these requirements and obtaining essential documents before arrival.

Here is a closer look at some of the current restrictions:

  • Barbados, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, St. Lucia: When traveling to these locations, it’s highly recommended to begin the import process at least 30 days before departure.
  • Colombia (MDE), Ecuador (UIO), Peru (LIM): Due to the high risk of rabies in these areas, JetBlue Airways is currently not accepting dogs or cats from these airports.
  • Colombia (BOG, CTG), Cuba (HAV), Dominican Republic (SDQ, STI, PUJ, POP), Ecuador (GYE), Guatemala (GUA), Guyana (GEO), Haiti (PAP), Honduras (SAP): Those traveling with pets from these airports may only enter the United States through JFK airport, and they must have documentation to be cleared for travel, such as: a U.S.-issued rabies vaccine certificate, proof of microchip, at least six months of age, and healthy

(Customers may travel to any of these locations from any airport.)

  • Trinidad & Tobago and the United Kingdom/Europe: At this time, pets are not permitted on flights to/from Trinidad & Tobago or to/from the United Kingdom (England) and Europe.

The Process of Flying with Your Pet on JetBlue Airlines

Booking a plane ticket with a pet in tow can be stressful enough, and let’s not even begin to discuss checking in! To help make the process simpler, we’ve highlighted the process of booking, reserving, and checking in with your purrific pal.

Booking and Reserving Your Pet's Ticket

There are three ways to book your pet on a JetBlue flight:

Keep in mind there’s a $125 fee for each way. Only six pets are allowed per flight, so booking early is best.

Checking In and Boarding with Your Pet

If the pet fee has been paid and you have your pet’s SSR code, you can check in 24 hours prior to your flight using the JetBlue app, JetBlue website, or airport kiosk. If traveling outside of the U.S., ensure you have the required documentation and paperwork, such as rabies vaccinations.

Once you have successfully checked in, stop by the full-service counter or find a JetBlue crewmember. They will check to ensure your carrier is approved and provide you with your JetPaws® bag tag.

At security, take your furry friend out of their carrier and allow the carrier to be x-rayed. Pets will go through the TSA Pre✓® with an approved traveler.

If you’re traveling with a pet stroller, it can be checked for no charge at the ticket counter. You can also gate-check the stroller if desired.

During the Flight: Tips for a Smooth Journey

Travel by plane can be stressful, not just for humans but for four-legged best friends, too. Luckily, there are several ways you can promote a smooth journey. Here are our top six tips for success:

  • Pick a good carrier – A comfy carrier will make your dog feel cozy and secure throughout the trip. Pick a good one – just make sure it’s JetBlue Airways-approved!
  • Acclimate your dog to the carrier. Don’t wait until the night before to introduce your dog to the carrier.. Start getting them used to their “sky home” a few weeks in advance.
  • Exercise before take off! Feeling cooped up can cause a lot of stress for your furry friend. Make sure they receive adequate exercise before departure.
  • Feed and hydrate (the right way) – A small meal is recommended a few hours before travel, but avoid larger ones that may cause motion sickness. Don’t forget to hydrate your pup, too!
  • Don’t forget the bathroom break – Your fluffy buddy shouldn’t have to hold it in. Ensure they get a good bathroom trip before you take off.
  • Stay calm! Finally, one of the best things you can do is relax. Your best pal feeds off your energy. If you remain calm, so should they.

Conclusion

JetBlue Airways is an excellent choice if you have a smaller pooch you want to bring along on the pawsome sky-high adventure. Unfortunately, though, at this time, JetBlue is not an option if you have a dog over 20 pounds or one that needs to fly cargo. Always double-check the latest regulations on JetBlue Airways’ pet policy before booking, as information can change.
