Is Frontier Airlines Pet Friendly? – Frontier Airlines Pet Policy (2024)

Written By: Michelle Kelgord

Let’s face it: if you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on airline travel, you’ll likely consider Frontier Airlines. Frontier is known not just for its low-cost flights but ultra-low-cost flights. Put simply, they mean business when it comes to offering customers the lowest priced flights possible – all while committing to a top-notch experience.

Are they a good option for travelers with fur-nomenon friends, though? Find out whether or not Frontier Airlines is pet-friendly below!

Is Frontier Airlines Pet Friendly?

We can describe Frontier Airlines’s pet policy in one word: bark-tacular! Frontier allows many pet buddies to join you in the cabin, including dogs, cats, and a few other small animals that can fit inside a carrier.

However, please note that animals are not allowed in the cargo at this time, so larger canine companions won’t be able to accompany you if you choose Frontier Airlines.

Frontier Airlines Pet Policy Details

Here at Jet Set Pets, we always encourage travelers to “know before they go.” With that in mind, we investigated Frontier Airlines’ pet policy to learn all the important details about flying with your furry friends—either in the cabin or in cargo. Let’s take a closer look!

Frontier Airlines Pet Policy for Carry-On Pets:

Frontier Airlines allows a wide assortment of pet family members in the cabin, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and small household birds. A $99 pet fee per direction must be paid while booking or checking in.

Here are some other essential things to know about Frontier Airlines’ pet policy:

    • You are allowed a personal item or carry-on bag (fee applicable) in addition to the pet carrier.
    • Dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old at the time of travel.
    • Pets are only allowed on domestic and international flights to and from the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
    • You cannot sit in row one or an exit row when traveling with your pet.
    • Pets must remain inside of their carrier at all times.
    • Pets are not allowed food or water during air travel, and sedation is not recommended.
  • All pets must be harmless, calm, and without offensive odors.
  • Frontier Airlines does not require health certificates for travel within the United States. However, some states may have requirements. It’s best to double-check with the state you’re traveling to before departure to obtain any required documents/certifications/etc.

Like most other airlines, Frontier Airlines has specific rules regarding your pet’s carrier. Here are the specific rules related to carriers:

  • Your pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
  • The carrier must fit underneath the seat directly in front of you.
  • Carriers must not be larger than 18″ in length x 14″ in width x 8″ in height.
  • Soft-sided carriers are recommended, although not required.

Frontier Airlines Pet Policy for Pets in Cargo:

At this time, Frontier Airlines does not allow pets in cargo.

Restrictions and Exceptions:

Frontier Airlines does not accept the following species:

  • Large birds
  • Rodents
  • Beavers
  • Ferrets
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians
  • Spiders
  • Insects

If you plan to fly internationally, you must check the laws, customers, and regulations of the country you’re flying to. They may require specific documents/certifications/vaccinations/etc.

Health certificates are required for all international flights with Frontier Airlines. They must be dated according to the country you’re traveling to. For example, you’ll need a health certificate within five days when flying to Mexico but 15 days before entry to the Dominican Republic.

Immunization against rabies is required for all pets over three months of age. The vaccine must have been within the last 12 months and no less than 30 days before travel. The boosters must be administered less than 30 days before the flight.

The Process of Flying with Your Pet on Frontier Airlines

You’re not going anywhere unless you have a ticket and board the plane! Read below to find out how to book/reserve your pet’s ticket and board the airplane when the time comes.

Booking and Reserving Your Pet's Ticket

Frontier Airlines makes it a breeze to reserve your pet’s ticket!

Here are the two different methods:

  • To Add During Initial Booking, simply select “Cabin Pet” at the bottom of the screen when entering your passenger information.
  • To Add to a Pre-Existing Booking: Enter your last name and confirmation code to bring up your itinerary. Select “Add Special Services” and add your furry friend to your booking.

Checking In and Boarding with Your Pet

Much like the ease of booking, check-in and boarding are also easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy with Frontier Airlines!

The process is essentially the same as if you were flying without your canine companion. Simply head to the passenger check-in desk, show them any documents (if required), pay the pet fee (if not paid beforehand), and ensure your carrier is OK for the trip.

Then, head to security, get through the checkpoint, and prepare to board your flight!

During the Flight: Tips for a Smooth Journey

Flying is stressful for everyone – and that includes your paw-tner in crime. Luckily, there are several ways you can make the trip easier.

Here are our top five tips for a smooth journey:

  • Acclimate your pup to the carrier – Don’t spring the carrier on your pooch at the last second! Spend a few weeks getting them accustomed to their “home away from home.”
  • Add some faves to the carrier – Whether it’s a stuffed animal, a blanket, or another favorite toy, adding a beloved item to the carrier can help ease your pawsome pal’s mind.
  • Get some exercise beforehand – Let your doggo get the wiggles out before putting him in his carrier! Otherwise, he may end up getting antsy along the way.
  • Don’t forget the basics, too – A bit of food and water before the trip is a good idea, and don’t forget those essential potty breaks.
  • Remain cool, calm, and collected – Your furry best friend can sense your emotions and will react accordingly. If you stay calm, they’ll stay quiet, too.
